I just watched Makoto Shinkai’s highly acclaimed 5 centimeters per second and it blew me away. In a nutshell, it explores the romance between 2 teenagers separated by physical distance and the emotional turmoil they face because of it.
Kyonko is supposedly Kyon from The Melancholy after much gender-bending and kicking reason to the curb. Apparently, it began when someone drew a picture of Kyon’s female counterpart at 2chan and she was so moe that her popularity skyrocketed. Her popularity has since extended beyond the internet. It’s amazing what the doujin world can do. References from here and here, courtesy of Akibablog.
What if our world had natural laws that deviate from those we are familiar with? What if magic and alchemy are an everyday occurrence against a stale backdrop of newtonian physics? What if the people with an inclination to wield and manipulate the arcane are arts and humanities inclined individuals, as opposed to people who are more able with calculations, derivations and the boring engineering technicalities?
I had my Thermodynamics final exam today. And I realized I totally screwed up even after so many hints were given. I really should have spent less time procrastinating on Saturday. Then again, it’s been the same thing happening all over this semester- having no direction, no drive and basically being in a state of despair amid a mundane existence.
But Macross F cheered me up a little. It has really high production values, what with it being a show commemorating the Macross franchise’s 25th anniversary. It already had one insert song in the opening episode, and the action scenes are pretty spectacular. While Gundam 00’s action scenes were animated well, it lacked the crucial element of being able to thrill. In this respect, Macross F is better. I also love the opening by Maaya Sakamoto, embedded under the cut.
Browsing an entry from RIUVA (probably one of the more informed anime blogs here in Singapore), I remembered a conversation between Kenny and I on the bus. We overheard some random people talking about anime kind of loudly and this guy was saying how he freeloaded so much of this season’s fare. No they didn’t sound like true otakus. They were more like Narutards/Bleachtards. Kenny suggested I join in their conversation, which I immediately declined, for reasons bordering on elitism. I know Anime is visual media everyone can appreciate, but I am repulsed by such people. The Narutard crowd are relatively easy to identify- usually by their mispronunciation of various Bleach shinigami moves, their akward sounding intonations or basically, their over-obsession with the typical shounen anime. The people on the bus were talking about Code Geass R2 and apparently, their behaviour implied that they never heard of it’s prequel before. Somewhere closer in my social circle, I have friends who stick to streams from Veoh and crunchyroll to feed their anime urge. I admit I’m exasperated over both their taste in anime and their leeching methods. Just so you know, I don’t use torrents.
Personally, I’m not exactly otaku. In fact, I’m far from that. I don’t read manga, don’t collect figurines, don’t cosplay, don’t keep my blog listed on animenano, don’t go batshit about seiyuus…
But at least I keep myself informed about anime trends and watch more compelling series compared to Bleach, Naruto, Dgrayman or Prince of Tennis. True tears anyone?
Spring season’s most-anticipated series aired yesterday. I’m not going to do rabid screencapping or episodic synopsis. You can probably find that on animenano. I’m posting whatever I want!
Taking a break from partial differential equations, I chanced over this really addictive clip while browsing 4chan. It’s Misao’s (from Lucky Star) voice excellently timed over a rendition of another ultra-popular tune that made waves 2 years back. I can’t remember the name.
Misao’s voice is probably the most interesting in LS, albeit her supporting character role/minimal screen time. Also, the nicox2 crowd is damn creative.
